The different faces of depression

Depression is a complex illness.

Depression is not the same for everyone and is experienced very differently by each of us.

Depression is not caused by anything. Often, it is linked to trauma or a chemical imbalance however, depression can happen to anybody. There is no evidence to suggest what the root cause of a depressive episode is.

There are many different types of depression.

Depression is not ‘sadness’ nor does it comes anywhere near.

Depression is not around for a day or two.

1 in 4 people in the UK will experience some form of illness such as depression. Globally more than 264 million people of all ages suffer from depression (World Health Organisation). The number of prescriptions for antidepressants in England has doubled in the last decade. Data from the NHS shows that 70.8 million prescriptions for antidepressant were give out in 2018.  This has increased since, 2020 so far has been one of the strangest times ever. People suffering from various mental illnesses have shot up.

Depression can be debilitating and it effects every single aspect of your life. Depression is also invisible and is hidden by many. An individual can be high-functioning and still have depression. DEPRESSION does NOT look the same on all. At times, those of us who look the most ‘put together’ or ‘fine’ are the ones who are silently suffering. It is a vile illness and the more we openly talk/write about it, the more people will reach out for help which will then lead to more open conversations and less worry or even embarrassment. This will help to break down the stigma around ‘mental health’ especially depression and anxiety.

Love to you all,
