What are panic attacks and what causes them?

Panic attacks are terrifying, there are a number of reasons why we have them. Panic attacks are an overwhelming wave of fear that takes over our bodies. It varies for each individual based on what symptoms they may experience. At times, there is no obvious trigger and it can happen at any time. Symptoms include:

  • Heart palpitation
  • Sweating
  • Shaking/trembling
  • Feeling tight-chested
  • Fears of collapsing and dying
  • Feeling light-headed / dizzy

These are just to list a few. Some of you reading this may experience other symptoms. The main cause of panic attacks is still unknown but is often linked to anxiety and worry/stress. Like with most other mental illnesses, it is not understood or researched enough. We just do not know know enough yet.

How long do they last for?

Usually they last a couple of minute up to half an hour, sometimes longer. They leave us feeling afraid of this reoccurring again and again.

Control your breathing

Find a calm corner and sit down

Meditation

Light exercise

If it keeps happening then seeks help from your GP – they may refer you for CBT or offer alternative treatments and advice.
